This article deals with the socio-political events that occurred in 17th century England and their relationship with the evolution of John Locke's political thought. By these events we mean: the English Civil War, the government of Oliver Cromwell, the Restoration of the monarchy with the Stuarts (1660) and the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Locke's links with Lord Ashley, Earl of Shaftesbury and the latter's influence on the later evolution of Locke's thought. It is a general overview of the life and intellectual aspects of the so-called father of empiricism and political liberalism, which seeks to understand the context in which our character develops. The general framework of this work is the ideas and events of European Modernity.
